Here are some tips on understanding this wiki:

Name: EnergyCommunity.wik.is

Purpose: To show how easy and versatile Web 2.0 technologies can be to address knowledge (through "Energy As A Unifying Concept"), business needs and developing the subject-matter questionnaire with content and measurements tailored to what you are looking for. See Introduction.

The "Energy Community": Where does it fit in the World’s Future?

Vision:

· Our world will soon be filled with energy-aware people, buildings, and machines.

· All these will share the energy-awareness of how important energy is to our being.

· Working together, we will make informed decisions – like: “Turn out the lights!”

Objectives:

· Engage all levels of the Public in the Vision

· Offer trustworthy energy-related Knowledge.

· Energy is the unifying concept that puts patterns into Perspective via:

       o Analysis: Total life cycle analyses of energy fuels, including externalities, costs and environmental impacts.

o Emerging Technologies will improve components of the Physical Fuel Cycle, the Six R’s (3R’s + 3), Conservation, Climate Change, and Renewable Energy.

o Greatest Ideas in Scienceput seminial events in science into context.

o Strategic Value: Why are energy and water tightly-entangled strategic goods?

o Questions: “What is most important to know about energy?”

How does energy work?” “What measurements; which standards?”

“Energy-awareness-wise, what should we be worrying about?”

o Quizzes: Tests for misconceptions about energy and science.

Functions:

·Knowledge: Understand energy - with related Ontologies in Libraries.

·Jobs: Energy-work-related jobs are in each economic sector, workplace, home and government.

Methods:

·Goal: To do whatever is needed to get buy-in into the Energy Community’s Vision.

 ·Basics of Knowledge: Science is based on being able to verify causal relationships.

o       o This can be grasped by understanding when and where “energy transformations happen.”

·Curiosity: Curiosity engines will run up Energy Strands via:

o Structured and developmentally appropriate knowledge trees and games.

o Explorable mind maps, discrepant event props, and Energy Flow Diagrams.

o The Physical Fuel Cycle, insightful videos, and tours of discovery.

· IT-type Projects:

o On-line Reality: Create an extremely friendly and trustworthy environment where energy-awareness and science education resources can be found and learned.

o Web 1.0 - Energy Kids Page: http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids has energy fuels’ info.

                Energy Kids Zonehttp://faculty.washington.edu/crowther/KidsZone/index.html is broader.

o Web 2.0 - Energy Community: http://www.visualknowledge.com/wiki/energy has great taxonomies, but the http://energycommunity.wik.is will go further with relationships, using relators and operators.

o Web 3.0 - Catch and ride the Semantic Wave with Semantic Heuristic Ontological Relator Terms
(i.e., an Open SHORT) - a conceptual mote in ontologists' eyes, as are the:

o Web 4.0 - Public Energy-Awareness Center, a 3-D Virtual Reality project, and the
Global Energy Network Information System (GENIS - proposed by the Millennium Project).

Web 2.0: This wiki supports blog (Word-like authoring) and most of the technologies of interest to everyone interested in making informed decisions on energy-related matters (which covers almost everything real that may or may not cast a shadow).

Business Needs: Essentially, build a Wikipedia-type knowledgebase for the Energy Community, and then process it into a Semantic Web database like DBpedia!

Security and Privacy: See how we restrict access to this Wiki and have Wik.is provide security for their hosting service (e.g. Public: everybody can view and edit; Semi-Public: everybody can view, but only selected users can edit; and Private: only selected users can view and edit this page).

Information Architecture: See how we classify information with taxonomies (ontologies) relative to all energy-related everythings, support data management, and improve dissemination using this Wiki. Classification is the first step in building a Wikipedia-type application; add hierarchies to get taxonomies; add relationships to get ontologies. We are integrating the information architecture (facets and subfacets) with the data architecture (data tables and data elements), extending the best practice example of the Census Bureau's Annual Statistical Abstract: National Data Book. The most important principles are: (1) Bring the data and the metadata back together; (2) Bring the structured and unstructured data and information back together; and (3) Bring the data description and context back together.

Extensibility: Integration with Yahoo!, Windows Live, Google, Flickr, WidgetBox, YouTube , and much more. Create and share application and/or content mashups. Contribute content

Collaborate

A browser and an internet connection is all you need to start adding content to Deki Wiki. Share ideas and plans through the simple interface. Click the "Edit Page" and "New page" buttons on each page to begin contributing content.

Create mashups

Deki Wiki supports boatloads of extensions - these are little features which allow you to embed content from other websites. For example, you can embed Google Maps, Windows Live Maps, AND Yahoo! Maps, all on the same page. You can also dynamically manipulate images using our ImageMagick extension.

There's so much you can do, so learn all about available extensions in your Deki Wiki by clicking the "Extensions List" tab (when the editor loads), or by viewing the Extensions page on OpenGarden.

Share media

Attach photos, files, and all sorts of media to any page to share with your community. Files and images are revisioned, just like pages, so you'll always be able to retrieve older files.

Track changes

Did somebody make a change to a page that was bad? Use the revert feature to change the contents of a page back to an older version. You'll never lose any work in Deki Wiki.
